To verify bulk green tea authenticity, turn every sales description into a separate testable claim, then match each claim to the records, sample and analytical method that can actually support it. “Authentic green tea” is too broad for a purchase decision. Botanical identity, tea type, ingredients, commercial style, geographic origin and lot continuity are different questions. A genuine document or passing laboratory result for one question does not prove the others.

Define authenticity before requesting evidence

Start with the exact product and the exact claim intended for the destination market. ISO 20715:2023 classifies basic teas made from Camellia sinensis and distinguishes green tea by its characteristic processing, including enzyme inactivation followed by operations such as rolling, shaping or comminution and drying. That is useful for tea-type identity, but it does not establish a particular garden, harvest, cultivar, grade code or shipment.

Keep the control layers separate:

  • Legal requirement: destination rules govern truthful food names, ingredient declarations, origin statements, protected names and fraud controls.
  • Voluntary standard: an ISO or private method becomes a contractual control only when the parties identify its edition, scope and decision use.
  • Trade reference: words such as Chunmee, Gunpowder and 9371 help buyers describe a commercial style; they do not independently prove origin or lot conformity.
  • Buyer specification: the buyer defines which identity statements matter, acceptable evidence, sampling point, method and release rule.
  • Contract requirement: the signed agreement fixes the controlling claim wording, evidence hierarchy, change-notice duty and remedy if a claim fails.

Use an evidence ladder, not a document pile

Rank evidence by how directly it answers the claim. A sales statement is a lead; a signed declaration assigns responsibility; contemporaneous source and production records show the chain; a representative sample connects the claim to physical goods; and a validated test can answer a defined analytical question. Independent corroboration strengthens the file, but volume is not quality. Ten documents copied from the same unverified source remain one source.

An eight-step buyer verification plan

  1. Freeze the claim wording. Record the exact name and statements planned for the bulk label, specification, customer artwork and consumer pack. “China green tea,” “Wufeng green tea,” “single-origin,” “spring,” “one ingredient” and a grade code each create a different evidence burden. Avoid vague premium or pure language that cannot be tested or consistently interpreted.
  2. Classify the product correctly. State botanical species, tea type, physical form and whether it is primary, refined or further processed. ISO 20715 is a voluntary trade and inspection reference for six basic tea types. ISO 11287 supplies a green-tea definition and basic requirements, but its scope excludes green tea subject to certain further processing. Do not apply a basic-tea method to a flavoured tea or extract without confirming scope.
  3. Map every input. Ask for the current bill of materials and process flow, including flowers, flavours, carriers, processing aids, rework and outsourced steps where relevant. Codex CXS 1-1985 treats a truthful, specific food name and ingredient information as separate controls. A botanical tea claim cannot silently answer whether another ingredient was added.
  4. Trace records to the lot. Tie source records and production batches to package IDs and quantity. Codex CXS 346-2021 says information on a non-retail container and accompanying documents should be traceable to the food, and requires clear food name and lot identification. Use the site's lot-control and recall test to challenge missing or duplicated links.
  5. Approve a representative physical baseline. Define dry-leaf appearance, particle distribution, infusion method, liquor, infused leaf and analytical limits. Record whether the approved sample is a type sample or the sale lot. Use a documented representative sampling plan and controlled supplier-comparison cupping method; otherwise the evidence may describe only the handful selected.
  6. Choose tests from a fraud hypothesis. Write the suspected failure first: wrong botanical material, wrong tea type, undeclared ingredient, substitution, or false origin. Then ask a qualified laboratory whether a validated method, reference database and decision threshold exist for that matrix. ISO/TS 5617:2025 provides a chemical-composition method to classify six tea types, particularly for teas produced in China, but expressly does not apply to reprocessed teas. It is not a universal geographic-origin test.
  7. Review the model behind fingerprint results. Origin work may use isotopes, elements, spectroscopy or metabolomic fingerprints plus chemometrics. The method must have authentic reference samples representing the claimed and plausible alternative origins, relevant harvests and processing variation, independent validation, controlled false-positive/false-negative risk and a rule for inconclusive results. A research accuracy figure cannot be transferred automatically to a different tea, season or commercial laboratory.
  8. Prewrite the release decision. Use pass when all material claims have adequate lot-linked evidence; clarify/hold when a record, scope or analytical conclusion is incomplete; and fail when evidence contradicts a material claim or the lot cannot be linked. State whether the response is relabelling, additional sampling/testing, replacement, rejection or another agreed remedy. Preserve retained samples and records before repacking or blending.

Common buyer mistakes

  • Asking whether tea is “authentic” without defining the claim.
  • Using one supplier COA to prove botanical identity, origin, grade and lot continuity.
  • Treating a voluntary ISO classification as destination law or a certificate.
  • Assuming a certificate of origin proves a farm, cultivar or protected geographic claim.
  • Applying a test outside its product, processing or reference-database scope.
  • Testing a convenience sample rather than the contracted lot.
  • Confusing a stable chemical profile with proof that no ingredient or rework was added.
  • Accepting a certification logo without operator, product, activity and transaction scope.
  • Ignoring supplier, formulation, source or process changes after approval.

Practical conclusion

The workable sequence is claim - scope - evidence - representative sample - targeted test - decision rule - lot release. Put the map beside the bulk tea purchase specification, review the limits of each certificate of analysis, and use the organic-document checklist when that separate regulated claim applies. To discuss a proposed lot, send the destination, exact claim wording, product form, grade, quantity and required evidence. The seller and buyer can then align a verification plan without turning a trade description into an unsupported guarantee.
